Learning Day-by-Day

A miscellany of news and children's work...

Year 4 - Science Week

Year 4 very much enjoyed Science Week before the Christmas holiday. We decided that you didn't have to wear a white coat and look like a 'mad professor' to be a scientist! Our first experiment was to investigate which type of chocolate shopkeepers would prefer a chocolate Santa to be made from, to best withstand hot display lights. The children made predictions, decided how to conduct the experiment, recorded the results and looked into whether the results fitted their predictions. We discussed the concept of a 'fair test', why it is important and how the beauty of science is that it is not always predictable and can produce unexpected results! The children were incredibly focused on their task despite the wonderful smell of melting chocolate!

There was some washing up involved after all the melted chocolate, and we discovered how detergents worked and removed grease with the 'magic milk' experiment. Drop some food colouring into a small amount of full fat milk. Touch a cotton bud dipped in detergent into the milk and watch as it swirls!

The most popular experiment involved investigating which substances mixed together, which separated, and why this might be. We had fun with cordial, water, milk, oil, and food colouring. We then used our findings about oil and water to create our own lava lamp! If you want to try this at home you will need a clear plastic bottle, fill it halfway with water and add some food colouring. Pour in the same amount of oil, then drop in an Alka Seltzer and watch what happens! The pictures don't do full justice to the 'wow' factor this had, however, the look on the faces of the children in the photo probably says it all!.
