Dear Parents and Carers of Year 5/6,
Welcome back to school for another exciting year full of wonderful learning opportunities. I hope that you all had a fantastic summer and the children have settled well into their new classes.
The Year 5/6 teachers work very closely together to make sure that the learning needs of all the children are met. Their names are:
6B Mrs Ruth Byrne – Assistant Headteacher
6S Mrs Hilary Silva
6C Mr Stephen Costello
5B Mr Daniel Berry
5OB Miss Katie O'Brien
5W Mr Tom Walsh
All the information regarding your child’s learning for this half term can be found on the Curriculum Newsletter on the school’s website. It is updated every half term. Check the website regularly for up to date news www.beaverroad.org.uk and follow us on twitter to find out what learning adventures are taking place in class. @BeaverRoad_Yr5 and @BeaverRoad_Yr6
If you have any concerns, then your child’s Class Teacher should always be your first point of contact. Staff will be at the door from which your child is dismissed at the end of the school day and their email addresses can be found on the school website.
If it is a serious concern it will be passed to Mrs Byrne in Year 6 firstname.lastname@example.org.
Attendance & Punctuality
If your child is unable to come into school, it is important you let the school office know at your earliest convenience. All late children are to report directly to the main school office and receive a late card before coming to class. Learning starts from the moment the children enter school and we want everyone to be involved, so please make sure your child is in school and on time.
For the safety of your child, please remember to inform your child’s Class Teacher if somebody other than yourself is collecting your child after school. This can be done via email/letter, contacting the school office or leaving a message with the teaching assistant on the door at drop off. If your child currently walks home or chooses to during the year, the class teacher will require a letter of notification so that they can ensure every child’s safety, even if they walked home last year. If no one has come to collect your child, they will be taken to the school office.
This year, children will not be set for maths and instead will be taught by their own Class Teacher. Ofsted maintain there is no clear link between grouping and attainment, in fact the ‘What Makes Great Teaching report’ actually cites grouping by ability as ineffective practice. Research shows that fluid grouping in the classroom provides a climate of flexible levels of challenge and ultimately reinforces a more fluid approach to learning.
Year 5 Year 6

Friday – Miss O’Brien Thursday – Mr Costello
All children will need a school PE kit and pumps/trainers. They will also need a waterproof coat in the event of inclement weather. As with all school uniform, please ensure your child’s name is clearly marked. The lost property bin quickly gets filled up and if clothes are named they can easily be returned to their rightful owner.
Year 5 and 6 children have the option of visiting the canteen at playtime to purchase a snack or they can bring in a healthy snack from home.
Don’t forget to order your child’s school meal for the day/week/term online at www.live-kitchen.co.uk/lk
Milk & Water Bottles
All children are encouraged to bring in a water bottle with a secure lid, preferably pull-top, to consume in class. Milk is also available to order from the main office.
Espresso is a safe and secure search engine and a wonderful educational resource for children to use at home. As a school we have full access to this resource. If you would like to use this at home the website address is:

Homework will be set related to the area of learning your child is studying in class. Homework is set on a Friday and handed in on a Wednesday. Please support your child to return the work on time. Miss Garvey and Miss Khan will be running a homework club at lunchtime twice a week and all children are invited to attend if they are having difficulty completing the work.
We actively encourage children to read daily, as well as frequently spell the words from the Y3&4 and Y5&6 Common Exception Word lists. It is crucial all children aim to learn their Times Tables as they are an integral part of maths at this age. Rapid recall will continue in maths lessons and the children should continue to practice the area they are working on.
We are very grateful for your continued support - thank you. We look forward to meeting you all.
Mrs Byrne – Assistant Headteacher Yr 5 and 6
