In Year 2, we believe that the best learning takes place when children are actively involved, taking part and enjoying themselves. Therefore, Kagan structures are at the core of all of our teaching and learning. Through these structures, children learn lifelong skills to work collaboratively, articulate their ideas and communicate effectively with their peers. This leads to children gaining confidence.

Lessons in Year 2 are taught through a variety of whole class teaching and small group work. Through continuous provision, children also have the opportunity to develop their independent skills through play-based and exploratory learning tasks. We carefully plan a range of learning opportunities which engage the children and reflect their interests. Pupils are able to make links between areas of learning and consolidate their knowledge whilst building on the skills they have learned in Year 1 and Reception.

The Year 2 classrooms have been designed to give children the chance to deepen their learning through exploration of concepts taught in class. Every classroom has areas such as the Reading Area, Investigation Space, Writing and Maths Area and a Creative/ Construction Space. Children will be encouraged to enhance their learning by independently accessing carefully planned activities in each area as well as taking part in group/ whole class learning. Throughout Year 2, the teaching team will enable children to learn new skills, challenge their thinking and embed new concepts.

We teach children to embrace a growth mind-set and take appropriate risks, whilst supporting them to be independent, resilient learners who can develop their own lines of enquiry, as well as finding their own answers. This allows children to gain a deeper understanding and a real purpose for learning.

Our Learning Environment contributes greatly in enabling children to be independent learners. Interactive displays, high frequency words, technical and ambitious vocabulary, WAGOLLS (what a good one looks like), top tips, common misconceptions, text features, book corners and easily accessible resources all contribute towards pupil progress.
