Multiplication Tables Check

Summer 1 update

Thank you for all your support at home with the times tables check. The cohort have made fantastic progress with their scores to date, with a number of pupils now consistently hitting 25/25, which is fantastic. This half term, children will all experience the official ‘try it out check’, so they are familiar with the format of the real assessment. The official check will take place during the first two weeks after the half term break (Week 1 and Week 2 of Summer term). As such, it is essential that we are informed of any planned absence during this period. The best way to monitor progress and check which tables facts are still proving tricky is by regular use of the Soundcheck on Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) - see more details on this below. Children should be aware of their own personal target and are given time to work on this in school. The children that make the most progress, however are regularly practising using the Soundcheck at home. As such, your support in dedicating time to this at home will make all the difference and is much appreciated.

Multiplication Tables Check

Children in Year 4 will be sitting the National Multiplication Tables Check in the Summer term and preparation for this will begin in class in September. More information regarding the check will be sent out near the time and parents will be invited to an information evening. It is paramount that children regularly practise their tables at home. Children will be required to know their tables up to 12x12. As the check is a test of quick recall of times tables facts, we advise the use of Times Tables Rock Stars to practise at home. Timestables.co.uk is also a great way to learn tables facts. Create a free account to be able to track progress and earn diplomas for each table and learn times tables with their simple 5-step plan:

  • Step 1a: View, read aloud and repeat. To get familiar with the table.
  • Step 1b: Fill in your times tables answers in sequence and check if you got them all right.
  • Step 2: Drag the correct answers to the questions.
  • Step 3: Fill in your answers for the mixed questions and check if you got them all right.
  • Step 4: Multiple choice questions will help you to improve by looking at the questions in a different way.
  • Step 5: Proof your knowledge and get the diploma.

Soundcheck

The 'Soundcheck' on Times Tables Rock Stars is perhaps the best way to monitor progress over time. Just like the Multiplication Tables Check available on Timestables.co.uk, it’s very similar to the actual test children will sit at the end of the year, however using the Soundcheck gives a clear record of score history and will allow pupils to monitor their progress and check which table facts are proving tricky. It is really important that children do not invert the keypad on TTRS as this will can cause confusion when inputting answers for the actual MTC test. The keypad should have 1,2,3 at the top as it does in the image below.

The Multiplication Times Tables: a parents' guide produced by theschoolrun.com is a further useful guide about the check. The STA (Standards & Testing Agency) have also produced an updated guide for parents (Information for parents: 2024 multiplication tables check).
