Phonics Screening Check and Year 2 SATs Guidelines

In Year 2, students participate in the Phonics Screening Check, which assesses their phonics knowledge and decoding skills. This essential check occurs in the summer term and requires children to read a series of real and nonsense words, helping to ensure they have a strong foundation in reading.

Additionally, Year 2 students undertake non-statutory Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) in reading and mathematics at the end of the academic year. While these assessments are not mandatory, we choose to opt in to provide valuable insights into each child's progress and understanding of key concepts taught throughout the year.

Current guidelines emphasize a balanced approach, allowing children to prepare without excessive pressure. Our teachers provide ongoing support and practice to build confidence and help students showcase their knowledge during the assessments.

Both the Phonics Screening Check and Year 2 SATs play a vital role in tracking progress and informing future learning, enabling us to celebrate achievements while identifying areas for further development.
