At Beaver Road, we aim to help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.  To inspire curiosity about the past, we teach History in a cross-curricular way.  Through a range of activities, we encourage children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.

History from all time periods is covered. In Key Stage 1, we focus on ensuring children understand that the world around them existed before they were born. Comparing the past and the present and the old and the new are key concepts within this. Children learn where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods.

In Key Stage 2, the earliest time periods are visited initially. As the children progress through the different year groups, so too do they progress through historical time periods.  History is studied in a thematic way, with both local and world history topics being covered.  Children are taught to recognise connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms, whilst understanding how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.

We aim for children to understand the role of a Historian and to think like one themselves. By understanding our past, children gain insight to how our lives have been shaped. With this understanding, our children will grow into citizens who use knowledge of the past to help shape their future.
