Year 1 is an exciting year for children, filled with lots of fun, rich learning opportunities and memorable experiences! Throughout this year, children begin to develop skills and build on the foundations they secured in Reception. They learn to be independent, understand how to be a good citizen and friend to others and develop a resilience that supports them throughout their time in Beaver Road.

The Year 1 team aim to make the transition from Reception to Year 1 as smooth as possible, as we understand that this change can feel like a big step for both children, and their parents. In order to ensure that our days are well balanced, and that learning is always appealing to the children, careful planning of provision allows us to reflect on the children’s passions and link these to our curriculum. We schedule weekly active sessions, where children can apply and consolidate their knowledge of English and maths in fun and engaging team games. Continuous provision provides play-based opportunities where children are in control of their learning and can independently explore tasks.

Phonics is a big part of life in Year 1. Children continue to expand on their knowledge of phonics – through fun and pacy phonics lessons and discreet day-to-day learning; children are always encouraged to use their phonics, and develop their understanding, in all that they do. We adopt a growth mind-set approach in Year 1 that we believe is pivotal in supporting children to build resilience, take risks and welcome challenge – in Year 1 we are not afraid to make mistakes!   

Year 1 is a happy, friendly place to be, with a positive and tangible energy that can be felt in every classroom. The team value each and every child’s unique talents and abilities, and aim to foster an intrinsic love of learning in all. Above all else, our main goal is to ensure that all children enjoy their experiences and education in Year 1, in our school.
